The International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) is a specialised pre-university academic framework offered by the International Baccalaureate (IB) organisation for students aged 16 to 19. It is the fourth IB programme and is designed to integrate the academic rigour and global standards of the IB with practical, career-focused learning experiences. SSVM Institutions Ruh Continuum K-12 Campus proudly offers the IBCP as part of its shared academic programmes, empowering students across its campuses to pursue career-oriented pathways alongside a strong academic foundation.

Overview

The IBCP was launched as the IB Career-related Certificate in 2006 and was relaunched as the Career-related Programme in 2014. It is currently offered by more than 350 IB World Schools across 52 countries. The programme is specifically designed for students who wish to combine academic study with professional and vocational skills, preparing them for higher education, apprenticeships, internships, or direct employment.

Programme Structure

The IBCP is built around three interconnected elements, each contributing to the student's academic, personal, and professional development.

1. Diploma Programme (DP) Courses

Students are required to complete a minimum of two and a maximum of four courses from the IB Diploma Programme (DP). These courses may be taken at either Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL) and provide the academic foundation for the programme.

Subjects available include:

  • Language and Literature
  • Language Acquisition
  • Individuals and Societies (History, Economics, Geography, etc.)
  • Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Systems)
  • Mathematics
  • The Arts (Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, etc.)

DP courses are assessed through rigorous international examinations, graded on a scale of 1 to 7.

2. CP Core

The CP Core is mandatory for all IBCP students and consists of four essential components that develop life skills, ethical thinking, and global awareness:

CP Core Components
Component Description Hours Required
Personal and Professional Skills (PPS) Develops transferable skills including teamwork, communication, ethical decision-making,

intercultural understanding, and self-management essential for career and academic success.

90 hours
Service Learning Encourages students to apply academic and social skills to real-world community needs,

connecting their learning to meaningful community service aligned with their chosen career path.

50 hours
Reflective Project A cumulative, research-based body of work in which students investigate an ethical dilemma

related to their career-related study. Produced as a 3,000-word essay or a 1,500–2,000-word essay with an additional format (film, oral presentation, interview, or display). Graded A–E.

Extended (over 2 years)
Language Development Students study an additional language for a minimum of 50 hours to develop multilingual

communication skills and international-mindedness. A language portfolio documents progress.

50 hours minimum

The Career-Related Study is the vocational core of the IBCP. Students choose a career pathway that aligns with their personal interests and future aspirations. The CRS is offered in collaboration with approved external providers and must satisfy IB criteria for accreditation, assessment, and quality assurance.

Common career-related study pathways include:

  • Business and Commerce
  • Information Technology and Software Engineering
  • Arts and Design
  • Engineering and Applied Sciences
  • Hospitality and Tourism Management
  • Health and Social Sciences
  • Media and Communication
  • Environmental Sustainability

Upon completion, students receive an industry-recognised certificate from their CRS provider in addition to their IBCP qualification.
