National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)
[edit]The National Institute of Open Schooling, commonly known as NIOS, is a national-level board of education in India established in 1989 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Formerly known as the National Open School, it operates as an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education and holds a status equivalent to other national educational boards such as CBSE and CISCE.
The World's Largest Open Schooling System
[edit]NIOS holds the distinction of being recognized as the largest open schooling system in the world, with a cumulative enrolment of over 4.13 million learners in the last five years alone. It enrols approximately 350,000 learners annually, offering flexible education pathways to students across India and abroad. The institute operates through a robust network of five departments, 23 regional centres, two sub-regional centres, two NIOS cells, and more than 7,400 study centres spread across India and internationally — including study centres for Indian expatriates in countries like the UAE, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Malaysia.
Courses Offered

- Open Basic Education (OBE) — For learners aged 14 and above, offered at three levels (A, B, C) equivalent to Classes III, V, and VIII.
- Secondary Course — Equivalent to Class X (10th standard).
- Senior Secondary Course — Equivalent to Class XII (12th standard).
- Vocational Education Courses — Skill-based programmes for career readiness.
- D.El.Ed. Course — Teacher education programme.
- Life Enrichment Programmes — Continuing education for personal development.
- Secondary and Senior Secondary Courses for ITI Students.
- Indian Sign Language (ISL) — Offered as a subject at the Secondary Level since 2021, making NIOS a champion of inclusive education. This initiative earned NIOS the prestigious UN King Sejong Literacy Prize.
Examinations
[edit]Public examinations are conducted twice a year — in April–May and October–November. Additionally, students enrolled under Streams 1, 3, and 4 can appear for On-Demand Examinations (ODE) at the Secondary and Senior Secondary levels throughout the year, except during the regular examination windows. Results are typically announced within seven weeks of the last examination date.
